Disorder of Skeletal System

0

From our day to day experience you might have learnt many problems associated with skeletal system. Some times during a cricket match the muscle of a fast bowler gets pulled, joint of a wrestler may get dislocated, bones of a person may be fractured in an accident and so on. Although bones are the hardest parts of our body but sometimes our skeletal system becomes weak and results in deformations. Some of these disorders are described here briefly.

1.Osteoporosis:

As you have studied bones are formed by the process of mineralization. Calcium phosphate is deposited on collagen fibers to make the bones. This calcium is taken with the food. From gastro-intestinal wall it is absorbed into the blood. From blood this calcium reaches the bones. The blood Calcium level is 30mg/100ml.

When person is not taking sufficient calcium in daily diet his bones start becoming weak. In this disease the bones become fragile and prone to fracture. Calcium start breaking up from the bones to maintain its level in the blood, a process called demineralization. If this situation prolongs the bones become soft and fragile and start bending and can easily be broken. This disorder is known as osteoporosis. This disorder is very common in females.

The leading cause of osteoporosis is a lack of certain hormone, particularly estrogen in women and androgen in men. Women especially those older than 60 years of age, are frequently diagnosed with the disease.

2.Arthritis:

Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints. It can affect one joint or multiple joints. The symptom of arthritis usually develops over time. This is a degenerative disease that damages joints permanently. As a results pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints takes place. Secondary bacterial infection causes acute pain which is usually treated with antibiotics. Cartilage is a firm but flexible connective tissue in our joints. A reduction in the normal amount of this cartilage tissue cause some forms of arthritis. In this disorder membranes lining the joints thickens, fluid production is decreased, which results in increased friction casing severe pain and in the later stages complete immobility. With the passage of time the joints become permanently swollen and get de-shaped.

Generally the patient feels more pain in winter. Different types of chronic arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gouty arthritis.

Osteoarthritis:

It is the most common type of arthritis, which occurs most often in older people. This disease affects cartilage which starts to wear away over time. In extreme cases, the cartilage can completely wear away, leaving nothing to protect the bones in a joint, causing bone-0n-bone contact. It causes joint pain and can limit a person’s normal range of motion. When severe, the joint may lose all movement, causing a person to become disabled.

Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This is an auto-immune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy joints, tissues, and organs. It can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of function in joints. When severe, rheumatoid Arthritis can deform, or change, a joint.

Gouty Arthritis:

When a person has gout, they have higher than normal levels of uric acid in the blood. The body makes uric acid in the blood the body makes uric acid from many of the foods we eat. Too much uric acid causes deposits, called uric acid crystals, to form in the fluid and lining of the joints. The result is an extremely painful attack of arthritis.

3 Necessary Condition for Seed Germination

0

Condition Necessary for Germination of seed.

For germination to take place the seed must be viable or living and should have sufficient food for its germination. Seed remain dormant or inactive until conditions are right for germination. When a seed is exposed to the proper conditions, water and oxygen are taken in through the seed coat. The embryo cells start o enlarge. Then the seed coat breaks open and a root or radical emerges first, followed by the shoot or plumule that contains the leaves and stem. The following environmental conditions must exist. First is moisture or water, second is air (oxygen) and third is suitable temperature. These conditions are discussed below.

1. Water

In addition to heat, plants need moisture to germinate. Too much water decay the seed in the soil, so proper amount of water is necessary. Through micropyle, the seed absorbs water, which swells it, causing the seed coat to burst. This helps the root to emerge out of seed. Water absorbed by the germinating seed help to activate the enzymes to digest the food of seed, which is made available to the growing embryo. It also helps to elongate hypocotyl and epicotyl to grow it.

2. Oxygen

Air is necessary for seed germination because oxidative metabolism usually takes over soon after a plant embryo starts to grow; most seeds require oxygen for germination. So, air is very important for germination as it contains about 21 percent of oxygen, which is used during respiration.

3. Suitable Temperature

As far as temperature is concerned, germination of seeds occurs over a wide temperature range b/w 5 to 30 C. Suitable temperature is necessary for the enzymes to function properly. During early germination of seeds, the vital metabolization of food reserves stored in the embryo cotyledons or the endosperm is mediated by plant hormones, which in some cases are gibberellin. Some flowering plants germinate best in cool weather, as they germinate best at temperature that range from 45 to 65 degree Fahrenheit. Colder temperature delay germination and may cause seed decay due to the soil’s initial spring dampness. Seeds germinate properly when the day time temperature exceeds 75 F.
